I first heard of Andrew White when he came to address a group of Ministers, of which I was part, during a trip to Israel in 2002. I remember being struck then by his wisdom, humility, faith and love for all people caught up in the conflict within the Middle East.
While on holiday this summer I bought his most recent book, and read it at the weekend. I found it profoundly moving, and at the end of it I was fighting back tears! I can't remember the last time a book has done that to me! I don't even know why!
Here is a man who is severely ill with MS, who daily puts his life on the line to not only be vicar to St George's in the centre of Baghdad, but who is at the forefront of efforts to bring peace to that region, and who has done a great deal to that end. One minute he is dealing with high-profile national leaders, the next he is negotiating for the release of hostages, the next he is providing food to those who are starving.
I'll say no more, except to highly recommend this book as a must. Andrew White is certainly one of my modern day heroes of the faith - he is walking the walk - despite the personal cost and risk to his own life. Read it and be inspired!
